Who pays for hospice?

Hospice can be paid for in a variety of ways. At New Vision Hospice & Palliative Care, our professional team can work with you to determine if your insurance will cover the costs of hospice and/or if you will owe a percentage or co-pays during the experience. We like to be upfront about what you will owe, if anything, so there are no surprises during this difficult time. Ultimately, the amount you will owe depends on the insurance covers that each patient has.

Medicare

Medicare does pay for hospice care with the Medicare hospice benefit. This benefit pays for all hospice services related to a patient’s terminal illness and co-related conditions. This hospice benefit however will not cover medicine, medical equipment or services that are unrelated to the terminal diagnosis. In order to be eligible for hospice care under Medicare, the patient must be entitled to Part A of Medicare and deemed terminally ill with less than 6 months to live.

Medicaid

Yes, Medicaid does pay for hospice services with the Medicaid Hospice benefit. Much like Medicare, they cover only services related to the terminal illness. The patient must be eligible for Medicaid and deemed terminally ill with a prognosis of six months or less. Our team must coordinate all care whether doctor visits, emergency room visits, treatments related to diagnosis and more to ensure that payment and reimbursement occurs.

Private Insurance

Most private insurance has hospice benefits that will pay for most, if not all, of these hospice services. We can research your insurance coverage and provide you detailed information on what they will cover, if not all, and what you will owe whether a percentage of the services provided to you and/or co-payments for medicine, etc.
